Westminster Presbyterian Church is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).

The Presbyterian form of government is representational. The governing body of a local congregation is known as the session. Representatives from the sessions of each church in a given area form a presbytery. Westminster belongs to the Presbytery of Detroit. Representatives from each presbytery are sent annually to the General Assembly, our national ruling body. In addition, regional issues are addressed by synods; Westminster belongs to the Synod of the Covenant, which covers the states of Michigan and Ohio.

News about the denomination can be found in the magazine Presbyterians Today, from the Presbyterian News Service and from PC(USA) Mission Workers’ newsletters. (see RSS feeds below). (What’s an RSS feed? Learn more here.)

Loren Scribner (interim pastor May–December 2003) writes on “The Great Ends of the Church” from The Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (USA). More . . .

Presbyterian Seal

A presentation made by former inteim pastor Loren Scribner on September 16, 2003 to the Westminster Session.

Comedian Flip Wilson used to say, as he strolled onto the stage in his atrocious female attire: “What you sees is what you gets.”

Funny he was, and I laughed.

But while funny, he was probably not a very good educator. Very often what we see is far from what we get, which is what so many young couples quickly discover after marriage. I am convinced that while higher education must prepare students to lead productive lives, education should also help students peer beyond the surface into the depths of reality.

St. Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth:

From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way.

The Christian faith, in particular, and religions in general, claim that reality is more than we can see or touch. The goal in my classes is to help students see with a new set of eyes and to hear with a new set of ears the beauty and sacredness of this world. And, I believe this is the unique opportunity of a church related college.

Today, I would like to use an illustration of this. First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville has blessed Schreiner College with two beautiful wooden seals of the Presbyterian Church. Most people look, think it is nice, and pass by. But most people also miss the message, which is hidden in layers of design which needs to be peeled away like the skin of an onion.
