1 The Cross

The highlighted area shows the cross of Christ, the most universal and ecumenical symbol of the Christian faith, which is shared by nearly all Christians. The cross embodies both the suffering of Christ and the triumph of God over sin and death.

As St. Paul wrote:

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it its the power of God” (I Cor 1:17–18).

Note that if one removes the dove from the seal, the Tau, or T, cross appears, which is the oldest known form of the cross and the one most closely associated with the crucifixion.
