2 The Dove The dove is one of the oldest symbols in the history of Christianity, most noted for its presence in the story of Noah and the flood and the baptism of Jesus. The dove is a symbol of sacrifice, in part because of purity, but also because it was used in ancient Israel as a sacrifice by the poor. It was used as a substitute for more costly sacrifices and thus connotes both piety and poverty. This pure, innocent bird was recognized in both Judaism and Christianity because it moaned when it made its love call and it had only one mate, a powerful way of describing the enduring, steadfast, and consoling presence of the Holy Spirit. |
