Alphas learn to build with living stones
By Leslie Picken, Youth Director
In January, at Howell Nature Center, Cathi King, Jeff Flynn and I took eleven Alphas on a spiritual retreat titled “We Are Living Stones.” You should have seen these young architects at work! They built a tower of Babel (and yes, it came down that very day), a ladder to heaven, and finally a church built with the God-given talents of each participant. We became “living stones” as we studied the scripture, as we built up community, and as we came to know one another better through the eyes of Jesus. The kids performed skits, went on a scavenger hunt, read a drama, played games, challenged themselves to a low ropes course, and best of all, just hung out together. The day was cold but we managed to stay warm by tossing the football or drinking hot chocolate. Blessings were given and received and a beautiful candle-lit Communion service was the highlight of Saturday night.
Claire Hughes, Jake Kilian, Brad Koenig, Jordan Koenig, Abby Ross, Katheryne Johnston, Ross Williamson, Courtney King, Lydia Brown, Maddie Kummer and Jordan Patterson provided powerful prayer support and constant enthusiasm. I see these young folks growing stronger in their faith with each trip we take. I am inspired by them. And I thank God for them. The journey continues!
