Why Drama Ministry?

By Sharon Flynn

On the second Sunday of each month, youth and adults bring voice, movement and acting to our worship services. These dramas are chosen and adapted carefully to explore and demonstrate the scripture, the sermon, the music or a seasonal theme. The presentation and interaction with the congregation give us powerful experiences of worshipping God with new insights, applications and emotional engagement.

Sometimes our dramas celebrate and affirm our current condition and sometimes they challenge us and make us think. To experience worship and the Bible in a personal way, to see something as if for the first time, and to move closer in our relationship to Jesus Christ is the goal of drama ministry.

We laughed when we saw ourselves in “Many Gods” as the gods of Television, Money and Self took the man to his knees before the cross. When we laugh we drop our defenses and are ore open to hearing a message we might have otherwise resisted.

We were checked to examine our own “Heel Marks in the Sand” when God approaches us.

We were caught up short when, in “Where is the Messiah?” we heard the line, “How are things in your neighborhood?”

In “One Incredible Moment” we were led to Simeon’s experience of waiting for God with the line, “One look into the face of Jesus, our Savior, and we will know the hope of our life has been fulfilled.”

And the heartwarming Mary and Elizabeth showed us so graphically that even thought we think we are too young or too old a willing spirit serves the Kingdom of Heaven.

The selection and writing of scripts, selection of actors, rehearsals and presentations are under a blanket of prayer. It is an encompassing worship of God from the very first step.
