Prayer shawl labels now available
To all who have received a prayer shawl from one of the deacons at Westminster: If you are interested, we now have a lovely fabric label that we would like to attach to it. It says “Peace To You” and has the name of our church on it along with “Ann Arbor, MI.” Please contact Jill Fairchild.
Westminster’s Needlecraft Ministry meets needs of young, old and ill
Beginning in October 2006, a group of women have met monthly to use their skills and interests to benefit others in need. A local nursing home has requested 50 to 60 lap robes, so with fabric donated primarily by Al Banning, we have been working on a variety of quilted robes. Donations of batting or money to purchase batting are needed, however, along with sewing and organizational supplies.
In addition, Jean Thiel made almost two dozen adult bibs that were donated to four different facilities. We have been knitting and crocheting caps for premature infants at the Holden Neonatal Unit at the University of Michigan Hospital. We are making hats and blankets to add to layette bags given by the Pregnancy Counseling Center to expectant mothers. And we are knitting hats for individuals undergoing chemotherapy at the U-M Cancer Center.Shawls and their makers surround recipients with prayer.
We have also recently begun a Prayer Shawl Ministry, thanks to the efforts of one of our members, Carolyn Fitch. Carolyn knits shawls for individuals who are undergoing a difficult period in their lives and who might appreciate a tangible reminder and the comfort of knowing that others are holding them in prayer. She prays for the person who will receive the shawl with each skein of yarn she uses. When the shawl is finished, all the women in the Needlecraft Ministry place their hands on the shawl and together pray once again for the shawl recipient. Cathi King is keeping the shawls in her office,
and the deacons are making note of people who might appreciate this gift.
You can help with these ministries in several ways. If you are aware of someone who could use a prayer shawl, let your deacon or Cathi King know. If you would like to join Carolyn in knitting shawls, please contact Jill Fairchild. If you would like to support this ministry with a donation to purchase yarn for shawls, you can make out a check to Westminster Presbyterian Church, with “Needlecraft Ministry” on the memo line.
