Senior sojourn celebrates youth “launching”

One often hears the cry: “Senoirs in high school drop out of church and we never see them until they have children of their own.” I am a witness; this is simply not true.

In mid-June I took five of our recent graduates for the first Westminster “Senior Sojourn.” We went to a cottage in the upper peninsula and spent two days and nights hanging out and talking and eating and laughing. and singing. We went on a kayaking trip to Duck Cove and saw a bald eagle and a deer leaping through the marsh. We read poetry and Scripture and gabbed way into the night by candlelight. We went to the “"World Famous Mystery Spot” in the rain and beheld the phenomonon!

The last night we made everyone's favorite food:pasta with cream sauce, mashed potatoes, rice, burritos, and pizza. And brownies of course. We played “car bingo” and I laughed so hard I had to pull the car over.

These are solid people, well-equipped to go out into the world. They have faith and compassion and strength. They have opionions and ideas and ambition. They are grounded up to their knees. No need to worry about Josh Daniels, Julia Espinosa, Kate Pohrt, Sam Rogne, and Katie Wright; they are fine. They are more than fine, they are great.

And so I say, thanks be to God for these friends; I know they will, and do, make a difference by their presence as their adventure continues. The best is yet to be!

Teens investigate identity of Jesus and of self

By Leslie Picken, Youth Director

Fifteen high schoolers traveled to Almont, Michigan, to Skyline Retreat Center for a weekend of spiritual renewal January 11-13. The theme was “Who Do You Say I Am?” We studied this from Christ’s perspective (“Who do we say Jesus is?”) and from ours as well (“Who do we say we are?”). We looked at scripture, we went on a photo scavenger hunt, we looked for the Christ figure in a contemporary movie, we read a Reader’s Theater piece. As Cathi would say, we “unpacked” Biblical theology as we attempted to develop a theology of our own. Who are we to ourselves and our friends? Who are we in God’s eyes? How do we come to know God? What secrets did Jesus keep, what did he reveal, how was he ultimately known?

Again and again I was amazed at the depth of spiritual insight of these folks. What an exciting time in their lives! How blessed are we, at Westminster, to have such faithful seekers of the Gospel!

Rich Polich came along and offered fire-tending skills, a listening ear, a competitive edge in our euchre games, and lots of support. Sarah Tidd, Josh Daniels, Kate Pohrt, Nate Polich, Emily Espinosa, Julia Espinosa, Aubry Robison, Lauren Sherman, Andy White, Andy Hess, Mike Mason, Cat Nease, Jesse Michalak, Travis Chaffee and Alex King offered laughter, prayers, singing and the strength that comes from a sure foothold on this journey of faith.

Thank you, God, for youth, for energy, for faith. On to the next challenge!
